In the upcoming winter and spring months, Leslie will continue her exploration of "THE EDGE" ... vantage, subterranean, chasm, hollow, descent, brink, free fall... For over a year now, she has been constructing scenes using images from reality, capturing once more the simplicity of silence in nature. Her use of bright colour and crisp detail produces rich, evocative and mysterious images that draw the viewer ever deeper into the interior symbolic landscape of the human psyche. Sketches of landscape forms and notes on composition that Leslie made in 2011 will serve as reference points. A sampling of her new work will be uploaded onto her website GALLERY PAGE throughout the coming months.
Leslie final Art Show for 2011 took place at the Denman ARTS CENTRE during the weekend of the renowned Christmas Craft Faire, on Dec. 3rd & 4th. Six island artists displayed mini/small original works of art, including paintings, collages and photographs. Priced affordably, many small works of art were purchased as gifts for family and friends in the upcoming holiday season.
2011's SUMMER's ART SHOWS ....
THE GARDEN OF LILIES ART SHOW at Leslie's Denman Island home was open to the public in early July. Hundreds of lilies and poppies were ready to burst. Alas, only 6 were in bloom .... but the peonies were in their full glory. Leslie's paintings were displayed in and around the house & studio. Leslie's new work was also on display in her solo show at the HORNBY ISLAND COMMUNITY HALL. The "OPENING" on Friday evening was a wonderful mix of visitors, old friends and new ones alike - with conversation about art, the images on the walls, and painting in general. Visitors dropped in steadily every day, leaving with cards or a painting, making it all a great success for the artist. Denman's KAFFEE KLATSCH BISTRO mounted a display of her work throughout the first 2 weeks of August, 2011. And the DENMAN ISLAND STUDIO TOUR in mid-August also provided an opportunity for visitors to see Leslie's studio & home space. People appreciated the chance to see artist workplaces and to peek into the creative process. Hundreds of visitors came to the island, visiting over 20 studios. Leslie's RENTAL SHOW and ART SALE took place on Thanksgiving weekend. Guest artist Connie Treen co-hosted the show. (See below for a more detailed description.) Since its inception five years ago, this Rental Show has steadily grown. Each year there has been an increase in rentals and sales, with people beginning to enjoy new art in their home for a very small monthly rental fee.
OCTOBER'S RENTAL SHOW & SALE
2011's RENTAL SHOW & SALE was held Thanksgiving Weekend on Denman Island. The program provided an opportunity for homeowners to brighten their living space with a painting during the dark winter months - all for a very small monthly charge. Later, should they decide to acquire the painting, all rental payments are applied to the purchase price. Leslie often hears, "I just couldn't part with the painting once I lived with it for a few months in my home...." This weekend has become more and more popular over the years. Rentals have been arranged for display in homes in North Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Denman Island, Courtenay, Victoria, Vancouver and Comox.
